Here is the procedure and the guidelines for changing your operator:

1. Send an SMS to 1900 in the following format:

PORT <Your Mobile Number> e.g. PORT 9123456789

(Note: ‘PORT’ is not case sensitive).

2. You will receive a reply from 1900, which will contain a unique ‘porting code’.

3. Send this unique code to the mobile operator that you have selected, through an SMS. The number to which you have to send your text message can be obtained from an operator’s website or, of course, from the ad blitz that will start soon.
Remember, again, this unique code is valid only for a few days (say, 15 to 30 days). You will have to send this SMS to your new operator at the earliest. Else, you will have to repeat the procedure described in point (1) above all over again.

4. Your existing operator will communicate with the new operator after checking if you have any outstanding amount. If your account has a clear balance, the existing operator will go ahead with the approval for the number porting.

5. The subscriber would also have to fill and submit the prescribed form for MNP to the new operator. The subscriber would have to submit documents (like photo ID and address proof) along with the MNP form to the new operator. Post-paid subscribers will have to submit a copy of their latest bill as well.

6. You will receive an SMS, which will provide the time and date for porting. According to TRAI, it is mandatory for both the existing and the fresh operators to complete the process for number portability within four days after the first SMS.

7. You will receive another SMS from the new operator, confirming the switch. Your mobile phone may remain ‘dead’ or without network coverage for about two hours while the porting takes place. But don’t worry-you will be able to go ‘live’ again with the new operator-and your old number.8. Remember, you can change your operator only once in every 90 days.

With mobile number portability finally seeing the light of day, you can say goodbye to your existing service provider and switch to any other player of your choice. But be warned—almost every operator in the country has been swamped by a number of complaints from subscribers


Are you among those who have been facing various issues with your service provider? From 20th January, you can easily change your mobile operator while retaining your number. According to an order issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), mobile number portability (MNP) will be implemented in all telecom circles across the country from 20th January.

MNP allows subscribers to retain their existing mobile telephone number when they move from one access provider to another, irrespective of the mobile technology, or from one cellular mobile technology to another of the same access provider-in a licensed service area.

What this means is that a CDMA subscriber can opt for another GSM (or CDMA) service provider and vice-versa.

However, one cannot change operators across circles. This means that a subscriber from Mumbai will not be able to shift to another operator from, say, the New Delhi or Uttar Pradesh circles.

The telecom regulator feels that the facility of retention of the existing mobile telephone number-despite moving to a new telecom service provider-would help in increasing competition between service providers and act as a catalyst for various players to improve their quality of service.

According to the TRAI notification, subscribers changing their service provider will have to pay Rs19 as “porting charge” to the recipient operator. However, operators are free to charge any amount lesser than this amount or equal to this charge, the regulator has decreed.

Before you are wooed by a lower tariff plan (or any other offer), do check with existing subscribers of the operator (you plan to switch over to) about the service and network quality that you might be going in for.

Of course, the subscriber has the option to go back to her original operator, after a 24-hour period, but she will have to wait for another 90 days before going in for yet another switch.

Pre-paid subscribers, look before you switch. Your balance talk-time will be wiped out if you switch to another operator through MNP.

In addition, for both pre-paid and post-paid subscribers, the number has to remain in service for a minimum of 90 days before the MNP option is exercised. This means that fresh subscribers cannot change their operator for this 90-day period.

HTC HD7 and HTC Mozart already showed up on the HTC India website which is an indication that the phones are soon going to be launched officially in India. More over, the popular online handset store – Flipkart has already started selling HTC HD7 in India for Rs. 29,999. These phones were already released in Europe this October.

* 1300 mAh Li-Ion Battery Standby 360 h (2G) and 435 h (3G), Talk time 6 h 40 min (2G) and 5 h 30 min (3G).

Both these phones have eye-catching design and great features. Lack of secondary camera for Video calling and expandable memory card slot is a bit disappointing though. But none of the Windows 7 based phones has secondary camera so far. Price of HTC Mozart could be something around Rs 30,000 (INR) considering the price tag of Windows 7 based HTC HD7 phone. LG and Samsung are also expected to launch their windows 7 phones Samsung Omnia 7 and LG Optimus 7 phones next year in India.

After months of waiting, India has finally gotten its first Windows Phone 7 release – and there are two of them! The HTC India website has showcased the HD7 and the 7 Mozart, smartphones running the Microsoft smartphone OS. The phones pack in plenty of features like a 1GHz processor, 720p video recording and an internal GPS antenna along with the standard WP7 features like Zune and XBOX Live integration.


The HD7 sports a 4.3-inch multi-touch display at a 480×800 (WVGA) resolution. Its connectivity options include GPRS, EDGE, 3G and Wi-Fi along with Bluetooth 2.1, a standard micro-USB interconnector and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It has 16GB of internal storage and 576MB RAM, a 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus and LED flash and 720p HD video recording.

The HTC 7 Mozart is nearly identical to the HD7, apart from the following specs. The internal storage and screen size are a reduced 8GB and 3.7-inches respectively, but it sports an improved 8 megapixel camera with auto-focus and Xenon flash and supports 720p HD video recording as well.

Fujitsu is a very known name in the camera world. It looks like they might join a multitude of other companies in bringing phones to our mobile-crazy country. A few of their phones could possibly suit Indian conditions too.


We’ve come to know that Fujitsu will be manufacturing 3G-enabled devices and looking at Reliance and other companies who’ve started 3G services in India, they just might cater to our needs. Currently Fujitsu manufactures mobile phones with Toshiba but will have plans of taking over the mobile phone segment completely.

Fujitsu’s phones have some good features like a 12.2 Megapixel camera and have a Fujitsu customized User Interface called NX! while phones like the Regza T- 01C run on Android based operating systems. Some phones are dust and water resistant, which are features that are just suited for Indian conditions.

There are some really interesting phones like their Prime Series F-048 which is detachable handset. You got that right, the display and the keypad can be separated and the display can still be used as it’s a touchscreen! There are quite a few phones that are worth taking a look at, but for now we can only be waiting for them to release their phones officially in India.

To cash on the growing mobile phone market, home-grown Karbonn Mobiles today launched ten new devices in the price range of Rs 1,500-Rs 5,000 and said it plans to launch 3G smartphones on the Android platform shortly.

“This latest range from Karbonn Mobiles underlines our commitment of driving affordability, coupled with great features in the Indian handset market,” Karbonn Mobiles Executive Director Shashin Devsare said here.

The new range from Karbonn consists of a variety of touch, QWERTY, multimedia and music phones across various price-points, Karbonn Mobiles said in a statement.

Pradeep Jain, Managing Director, Karbonn Mobiles, said, “We plan to get even more aggressive with fresh initiatives to ramp up our operations and aim to double our sales by the first quarter of the next year.”

He added, “We are extremely upbeat about the Indian market and are planning to launch 3G smartphones on the Android platform shortly.”

Karbonn Mobiles is a joint venture between Delhi-based Jaina Group and Bangalore-based UTL Group. It sells about 10 million mobile devices in the country every month.
